PostSubject: Coil   Thu 10 May 2007 - 17:53

Anybody here listening to Coil ? This is not my favorite band in the experimental/orchestral field, but yet some of their stuff can be REALLY haunting...

wikipedia :

Coil was an English cross-genre, experimental music group formed in 1982 by John Balance—later credited as "Jhonn Balance"—and his lover Peter Christopherson, aka 'Sleazy'.[1] The duo worked together on a series of releases before Balance chose the name Coil, which he claimed to be inspired by the omnipresence of the coil's shape in nature. Today Coil is one of the most influential and best known industrial music groups.

The group's first official release as Coil was a 1984 EP titled How to Destroy Angels. Following the EP's success Coil produced a series of three albums, Scatology, Horse Rotorvator and Love's Secret Domain, which met with little commercial success, but were praised as innovative due to their blend of industrial music and acid house.[2][3]

In 1988 the group began working on a series of soundtracks and released experimental music under several pseudonyms. Coil redefined their sound during this period, and by 1998 were incorporating drone sounds into their recordings. In 1999 the group gave their first performance in sixteen years, and began a series of mini-tours which would last until 2004.[4]

Following the death of John Balance on November 13, 2004, Peter Christopherson announced via their official record label website Threshold House that Coil as an entity had ceased to exist.

I tried to get in their style, listening to LPs such as horse rotarvator or
scatology. I did not apreciate. Actually, it sounded quite boring.
Never really understood why it was described as
an industrial band anyway..

awwww... Coil can't be reduced to "industrial". I'd say they pioneered apocalyptic orchestral music, rather.

coil are responsible for some of the most moving music I've ever heard especially the 'horse rotorvator' album and 'love's secret domain', hearing Marc Almond sing with them thrills me.

they also wrote some of the greatest lines such as :

'Angels take poison, in rotten pavillions'

Coil – The new backwards

Boring self-indulgent coilectronica. The vocal tracks are a bit better, but won’t get anyone excited. The only “good” tracks here are the jazzish “nature is a language” and “princess margaret’s main man”, with its cool soundtrack feeling (thumbs up to the trumpet on that one). Cool, yeah. But completely forgettable.

I'm thinking of doing a live cover of Tattoed man soon, probably with Cheerleader 69 or maybe with a new live project ("le cabaret de l'impasse", more news soon)

Beautiful records. The only track I don’t really like is the abstract-bleepy “2nd sun syndrome”… Everything else is just perfect. In a deeply 70’s way ! Some parts could be found on an old Tangerine Dream record… And “The avatars” has this almost really chrome-esque feeling…
