After over one decade of creating electronic music, the creative mind behind OIL10 figured it was time for a retrospective which led after lots of reworking and remixing to the release of ‘Retrofuture’.

The opening track ‘Airwave’, which is a creeper in regards to its pace, also introduces a sound element that is repeatedly used within many of the tracks this compilation include like on ‘Propaganda’ or ‘Synthetic Sin’ if you need a few examples. It’s a noisy pad adding an extensive depth effect and width to each composition it is used in aside from a sheer stream of melody. As Gilles is also profoundly influenced by film scores and respective composers such as Vangelis or John Williams it shouldn’t be a surprise for anybody that several tracks paying tribute to this face of his works would find a home on ‘Retrofuture’ as well. The first outstanding one is called ‘Grand Illusion’ utilizing a massive synth build up to give birth to a subliminal soundscape that could as well be from a sci-fi movie that hasn’t been shot up to this point extended with pretty generic club-friendly beats. With ‘Second Moon’ we’re going to leave Earth’s atmosphere for a trip into space where washes of synth atmospherics tower up, rove around and then evaporate to come back shortly thereafter repeating the cycle. For ‘Fade to Black’ all the drum synths get a break for 4+ minutes as it’s entirely basing on cunningly interspersed layers and samples flushed with a menacing hum and orchestral breakdowns. ‘The Beast’ first gives preference to the monotony of techno-ish beats relaxes everything a little soon by employing monumental synths.

On ‘Counter Clock’ which releases us out of ‘Retrofuture’ the heart-beats (Describes their sound exactly) only play secondary roles. Atmosphere, mood is what counts here and it is a mood of farewell we’re confronted with transported through plaintive atmospherics. Fans of well-crafted electronica and cinematic ambience can give their ears something new to crave for with ‘Retrofuture’ but also the ones who already own certain releases of OIL10 will find their money’s worth invested as some new tracks are waiting as well.

This album comes to celebrate 10 years of Oil 10. This French solo-project set up by Gilles Rossire has always been a very particular entity from the electronic scene. It's nearly impossible to compare Oil 10 with any other band, but you definitely feel the passion and love for danceable electronic soundscapes. Oil 10 has a unique and very recognizable sound, which is characterized by the typical space bleeps.

"Retrofuture" can be seen as a kind of "best of", but more than this it's a retrospective and an opportunity to (re)discover some of the most essential pieces from the past years. The songs were remastered and remixes while we also get 2 new songs. The sound of Oil 10 has been always instrumental, but spiced with some intriguing and essential spoken samplings. There's also a strong cinematographic vision emerging from the songs. That's quite understandable, as G. Rossire has already contributed to several soundtracks. "Retrofuture" offers a nice cocktail and balance between more danceable pieces and softer tracks. The 1st part of this album is definitely in the sign of the most danceable cuts. It's really cool the way an old song like "Airway" originally released in 1999 directly brings us to the essence of Oil 10. After this appetizer things start to become really serious. "Oil 5" is another "older" cut, but it sounds fresher than ever before. You perceive some 80s touch running through the song while it's minimal dance music as well. "Propaganda" is another attention grabber while "Synthetic Skin" is definitely a highlight. I really like the way this song has been built up leading to a kind of climax. That slowly brings us to the absolute "hit" of Oil 10, which has been originally released on the "Arena"-album now 6 years ago. "Lost In Metropolis" remains an essential track! The 2nd part of the album becomes slower and more atmospheric like. It definitely stands for another side of the project, adding more diversity to the global concept. "The Beast"is the only song that brings again some danceable rhythmic. "Strange Days" and "Electric Angels" seem to be the new pieces, which didn't immediately catch my attention. They're like belonging to the softer side of the project, but they're fully enjoyable as well. If you're not familiar with this project the album is a damn good opportunity to discover the fascinating universe of Oil 10.

With his honeyed voice speaking of mythology, symbols and archetypes Oil10 takes precedence on The little man in mush, amidst the familiar minor key guitar chords and sterling percussion work Smile . The little man in mushs largely eschews the traditional verse-chorus song structure for a loose approach where Ab Ovo's music provides musical backing to Oil10's musing and words of advice. Together with the sun and the moon, a nautical theme is quite in evidence, in the titles and in a series of tracks utilising sea based samples, and tidal effect guitar remmiscent of the sound of lapping waves beer . There's even a number of experimental tracks such as 'Can't take my eyes off you' with an amusingly provoking sample and discordant, reverberating ebow or on 'The bongos ot the gorillas', which provides a Colder-esque interlude of distant harmonies, treated vocals and spartan percussion ange . The best moments on The little man in mush arise from timeless acoustic tracks such as 'The Horse guards tactical way' and the sixties folk-pop of 'The preacher's waitress', which recalls Oil 10's sojourn with Stéphane Burlot, well-known photographer as No Hair Man where they worked their devilish charms on a series of songs dedicated to love and death.
