PostSubject: Skinny Puppy "MythMaker"   Tue 27 Feb 2007 - 22:12

Man...what a great fucking album. I love the endless tounge n cheek vibe created & dished out by Ogre. From the repeated "OH YEAH" of "magnifishit" to "jesus wants to be ugli" on the track "UGLI". this album puts me in a great mood. My fav tracks at the time are "haze", "pedafly", "jaher" & "politikil". The album sounds more cohesive that the last...and i think the lack of contributers to this album is the reason.

The tour should be rolling around soon and i can't fucking wait. And for you dOWNLOAD fans....the new album "FIXER" should be out very soon when cEvin Key releases From the Vault series II. This will also include Back & Forth 7 and i think they're re-releasing Doubting Thomas.

b R a P ON ! ! !

I LOVE Skinny Puppy. And I would have LOVED to love this album as much as I LOVE most of their work.

(LOVE LOVE LOVE ?????? am I going mad or what ?)

anyway, I listened to this record very closely... there's nothing in it I don't like... but there's nothing I really like :-(, I mean, nothing that gets me MAD like Worlock did or Assimilate or even daddyuwarbash...

But still, this is a great album, wompared to most releases !!!!

i understand....this album isn't earth shattering...but the fact the 2 Kevin's are still brapping puts a smile on my face everytime I hear it. It's not "Last Rights", "The Process" or ViviSect 6" but it's ten times better than the Dance Industrial that's out these days.

I miss the experimental side of Industrial music...... piou .....sorry i had to put that smiley...good stuff sex6 ooopps!!!

yeah it definitely beats out the shit that's supposedly "good" these days, that's for sure!!

i always have this horrible feeling that the music world is going down the tubes at such a fast rate (especially in America), that if something(s) or someone(s) don't help soon, we're doomed. just plain old DOOMED.

yeah, the children of Africa need saving....but so does the world of music!!!!

Download Fixer

Bleeping electronica with no focus and no meaning. Pure wanking. OK, you might like it if you’re into deconstructed IDM ; I’m not. Some pretty cool sonic textures, tho (that’s cEvin Key after all !) but ruined by the overall structure. The only tracks I felt some emotion whilst listening are the very breakcore-ish 12 Yearsblows, with its cool emotional opening before the abstract rhythmic storm, Starve (nicely crafted drum pattern with cool subdued sound-waves and dance-wavish synth), and Hoorse, the only thing here to relate (even loosely) to a “song” (sounds a bit like Tear Garden stuff, actually, with cool ethnic percussions). And Eruption could have been ok with Ogre singing on it (or actually anyone ! Any fucking voice !)… But in the end, completely forgettable.

You must get the dragon experience by Cevin Key, if you haven't done it before. A lot of emotions with this record.

The download stuff is amazing but far from the orignal SP universe.

Beside toxicology, of course, with the cover of scrarecrow. Very Happy

Well, Dragon Experience is OK, but I must confess the only cEvin Key song I really get my kicks out of is Frozen Sky... Which really sounds like SP anyway. But I FUCKIN'LOVE The Tear Garden.

Frozen sky was the symbol of the reunification of SP, they hadn't worked together from year when cevin key composed the ghost of each room, it's a great song.

I have to agree with you. I miss the Fournace & The Eyes of Stanley pain era. Download is supposed to put out an album this year or next. Spybey is supposed to be more active in the next album.

Also....I'm going to see cevin key DJ in Austin Texas in july. He's gonna spin Sp/Download/Plateau/Doubting Thomas & more...can't fucking wait! rulaiz

Ahhh...Sp & Throbbing Gristle brapping together amour

I wish Sp would go back to the brapping days...shed the over processed sound. Not that I don't appreciate the last 2 albums...

Well I'm not afraid to say that I don't really appreciate both of these records - the only songs I really feel something when listening to are Daddyuwarbash and Magnifishit... And well yeah, the "over-processed" sound, as you put it, maybe a cause for that. Anyway, these albums are still better than most of the aural trash we get to hear these days... But cEvin seems to have gone a bit too digital for me. I think the latest Ohgr effort really captures again - in a new, un-nostalgic way - the brapping vibration. As far a I understood, it was recorded very quick, with lots of improvisation... I hope a next SP record will sound a bit more like that !

And what about this "forgotten" Skinny Puppy side-prohect ?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hilt_(band)

Hilt was a collective group of Vancouver musicians, usually referred to as a side project of the group Skinny Puppy. The group comprised Alan Nelson, a seminal member of many local Vancouver rock & punk groups, on vocals, with cEvin Key and D.R. Goettel on instruments.

Originally named The Flu, the group was assembled whenever cEvin and Dwayne lived temporarily in Toronto while away from touring/recording with Skinny Puppy. They released a few cassettes in Europe, composed of material that was very much a precursor to Hilt. In 1989, Key and Goettel's label Nettwerk made a bet with the group that they could not produce and record an album for a low budget, reputedly $15,000. They accepted, and the result is the lo-fi debut Call the Ambulance (Before I Hurt Myself). An EP followed in 1991, entitled Orange Pony, with the follow-up LP Journey to the Center Of the Bowl.

During the years of 1992-1995, Key and Goettel focused on Skinny Puppy, putting Hilt on the side. After the untimely ends of both Skinny Puppy and Goettel, Key continued recording his many side projects, which included Hilt. Sessions with Al Nelson continued in 1996, with three songs recorded as a result. Al Nelson died from complications due to diabetes on January 23, 2000. Key lamented (verbatim): "Al was the nicest and most real person I have ever known. He had a sense of humour that could make anyone smile. He was incredibly talented. He was very dedicated to his friends, and his heart was beautiful. He will be greatly missed."

In 2003, Key released The Worst Of the Flu, an odds-and-ends collection of unreleased and alternate tracks by Hilt & the Flu recorded from 1985-1990. Another recording, Minoot Bowl Dropped the Ball, featuring material of a similar ilk to Worst of the Flu, was released in 2007. According to Key, approximately seven LPs worth of material were recorded in the above time period, and may see the light of day in the future.

rulaiz New dOwnload & plateau albums coming soon... rulaiz

update from litany.net...

The third mail-order exclusive series from Subconscious Records is days away from being available for pre-order. cEvin Key has provided us with the details of each release in this latest series, which consists, for the first time, of all brand-new material:::

BananaSloth: Zombie Battle 2019
Shimokitazawa Tokyo gave birth to new monster BananaSloth. Electronics and psychic energies channeled and translated into musical data, the Sloth travels in time to give us this debut album, Zombie Battle 2019!

Download: HElicopTEr
Phil Western and cEvin Key have been collaborating for fifteen years and nine albums. This recording takes advantage of most of the oldest synths from the studio collection.

Djoto: Slow Motion Burn
Djoto from Koenji Tokyo has been sending demos to Subcon for over a decade and has collaborated with cEvin in Tokyo on all of the recent DJ events. A communications engineer that really knows his phase.

The Tear Garden: Have a Nice Trip
A new album of material made over the past year at Subconscious and Edward Ka-spel's home studio. It features mixes by many collaborators including Collide, Humble Brothers, Frankie Pett, Raymond Steeg, and more..

Otto Von Schirach: Magic Triangles
Miami represented by none other than Otto Von Schirach. Some of his heaviest work to date. A must have!

PlaTEAU: Gort sPaCebar
Phil Western and cEvin Key. 5th album for PlatEAU. The spacebar is definitely a place worth visiting for a while. New recordings and a new level of electro space groove.

Baseck Sonic Death Rabbit: tba
Representing Los Angeles is none other than the sonic Gameboy tracker terrorists. This is their debut album.

There's a lot in there to be excited about. Following the double-punch of Fixer and Kushbush in the last Vault series, not to mention Phil Western's Kone records of last year, the new releases from Download and PlatEAU should prove something massive. We get to hear new Tear Garden with contributions from Collide, potassium from the future, new causticity from Otto, and music by a couple of brand new electronic artists. Plus it's going to be wrapped up in the gorgeous artwork by Mr. Simon Paul, some of which you see above. Stay tuned right here for ordering details.

Hymns Of The Worlock – A tribute to skinny puppy

Most
tributes albums are really terrible – we all know that. Especially
Cleopatra Records tributes. But this one seems to beet’em all… Most
versions deserve death penalty. I would only save three tracks : the
Electric Hellfire club of Worlock, which ain’t no good in itself but
looks completely genius compared to the othet tracks ; and two
BRILLIANT tracks coming from the SP/Download camp : a scary version of
“Love In Vein” by Dead Voices On Air (Mark Spybey’s band) and a cool
live version (or so it seems) of Download by Download. These two are
really worth the hearing… Forget about the others.
