| from my blog, a short review of a classic gong-related record : Steve Hillage’s solo carreer outside Gong – under his own name, as System 7, or as a producer for Rachid Taha – has always been quite challenging. Getting back to this early record can be a bit disappointing if you expect – or think you remember – “exploratory music” : “L” is just perfectly played hippie space rock, and that’s really enough to make it a very enjoyable album ! Steve’s guitar has a definite post-Hendrix flavour that aged very well, his voice is nice and spacey, the rhythm section wanders around the beat just like you might expect ; yeah, you might say the lyrics are a bit … dated ; but, let’s face the facts : who cares about lyrics anyway ? This is just a real cool record, whose influence can distinctly be heard on The Legendary Pink Dots. And there are some pretty unexpected elements, like the almost distorted drums at time, and the thunderous Arabic heavy-metal at the beginning of Lunar Music Suite… Really not that bad. |
