we, french people, are not used to hear rock n roll lyrics. Most of the things translated in french sounds really cheap for us. I think first it is more cultural than anything else. Because we are not used to.
And also because french doesn't sound the same. So it doesn't fit with some special kinds of music, or it have to be used in different ways.
German looks really heavy and straight, it sounds adapted to cold industrial martial stuffs.
I think french is not bad for hip hop in a way.
Lots of rythmical and flexible vocabulary. (i tried to make a hip hop song once) Or there are some soft songs that sounds really nice in french. I think of keren ann for example.
So i think, english is more adapted to rock n roll that is all!

yay Kerenn Ann ! she has good lyrics in french and english, how could I forget her ?

Domnique A, yeah, his lyrics are okay, but i didn't listen to much of his stuff ... I still prefer Monochrome in english even with the french accent on Yann Thiersen's record.

And the lyrics from the Tamtrum stuff ? is it on My Fall ? i don't remember well ... I thought i find it strange first time i listened to .. but seemed okay then.

yeah, "My Fall" was what i was referring to, i guess. it sounds cool. even though i'm wondering what exactly is being said, it doesn't seem ridiculous. i think they indeed do get away with using French.

the french version of "monopoly on sorrow" by Suicidal Tendencies ("le monopole des sanglots") or the fantastically horrible french song by Megadeth are good exemples too...

"A tout le monde, à tous mes amis, je vous aime, je dois partir"
It probably sound ridiculous to us; but not to non native French speaker. For a start, it's not a thing I would ever say, in those words at least.
And well, sometimes if I try to translate songs from English to French, trying to understand what it means in the end, I'm sometimes very disappointed. It often sounds like "easy found" lyrics, always the same words and expressions (I'm talking about the massive and mainstream music produced in the US we can hear in France of course).
Tamtrum's initiative to make a song in French (with an English title rulaiz ) was interesting, and didn't sound bad at all to my ears. The first time I was even surprised, not used to pay really attention to lyrics, expecting English when I realized it was French !
But I agree with Vx when he talks about the real writers we have in French songs, they usually not use Rock or nervous music to express themselves, probably to touch more people ? Jacques Brel songs can make any French cry Wink

And there's this "famous" rock band in France, Lofofora, that made a lot of people shouting "Regarde dans les yeux, celui qui te souille, fait un voeux et coupe lui les couilles !" (Stare in the eyes the one that makes you dirty, make a wish and cut off his balls !) (sorry for the approximate translation :s). A kind of hip-hop lyrics on heavy guitars Smile

In My Fall "long-t-escalier" isn't french at all, I don't think any non-french speaker can hear it as a mistake but that's a huge one.
(But I still love this song)

I think anyone can easily hear "Bouc Emissaire" (PY) in French on the internet.
And the cover of "Les Elephants" is also partly in French, I like this one.

In french "Those who live live by the dead " is, in my opinion more beautiful than in english, if i remenber, the title is in french, why not the lyrics? Artaud is one of the best Writer in the earth, and you can find soooo many sample of his incredible voice! i think it'ss important to do that, but maybe im too drunk... :p

I also think english is better for PY because of their characters on stage. it isn't Vincent but a crazy, zombistic alter ego from another world.
Like a band coming from a warp zone kickin' your asses.

English is good to make this distance between the singer and the character. Also, many PY songs refers to many movies wich must be lived in english and in the underground US codes.

When Vx sings "French Pigs" in english, the sense's deeper and better than the same in French. Wink
